By Greg Roelofs
Rank: 2

The image editors listed below are provided courtesy of Greg Roelofs' site on Portable Network Graphics (PNG).

The selection of PNG-supporting image editors is sparser than that of the viewers, but more are being released as demand for the format increases.

Application OS Comments
BePaint BeOS All versions; read/write (via Jon Watte's BeOS datatype library and Simon Clarke's PNG handler); 83k.
CorelDRAW Windows 95, NT Version 7.0 and later; read/write; includes Photo-Paint and Dream 3D. (Photo-Paint is reported to have no alpha/transparency support; likewise CorelDRAW itself, at least for exporting vector images.)
CorelXARA Windows, Windows 95, NT Version 1.5 and later; read/write. (Windows 3.x support requires win32s 1.3.)
FreeHand
Graphics Studio
Windows 95, NT, Macintosh Version 7.0 and later; read/write; alpha support; interlacing support. (According to Chris Lilley: "FreeHand has a rather nice interface when writing a PNG of a vector graphic -- the amount of anti-aliasing (supersampling of pixels) and even the sampling method can be specified."
The GIMP Unix, X, Motif Versions 0.54 and 0.60 (current is 0.99.x); read/write; uses libpng and zlib. (The GIMP is a "free Photoshop-like image editor for X11/Motif with built-in PNG support." The Motif requirement was removed in 0.99.x along with PNG support.)
HoTMetaL PRO Windows Version 3.0 and later; read/write. This is more of a general-purpose Web page authoring tool, but version 3.0 integrates image-editing features; see also MetalWorks below.
ImageFX Amiga Supports PNG with version 2.1a and later (natively), or any previous or earlier version with Cloanto's free PNG DataType; read/write.
ImageStudio Amiga Version 2.1.1 and later with ImageStudioPNG add-on [88k]; read/write; 640k + 579k.
Kai's Power Tools Various See xRes below.
MediaStudio Pro Windows Version 2.0 and later; read/write (also MediaStudio VE and MediaStudio 1.0).
MetalWorks Windows All versions; read/write.
MorphStudio Windows All versions; read/write.
OfficeArt Windows 95, NT All versions; read/write. This is part of the Office 97 suite.
Paint Shop Pro Windows, Windows 95, NT Version 3.01 and later; read/write; no gamma support; only simple (binary) transparency; writes unnecessarily large palettes.
Personal Paint Amiga Version 6.3 and later; read/write. This was the first commercial app to ship with PNG support, in April 1995. Cloanto also made available a free PNG DataType, and has a commercial PNG toolkit for the Amiga. For information send email to info@cloanto.com.)
Photogenics Amiga Version 2.0 and later (or version 1.2 with the Photogenics PNG loader/saver; read/write.
PhotoImpact Windows 95, NT All versions; read/write.
Photo-Paint Windows 95, NT See CorelDRAW above.
Photoshop Windows, Windows 95, NT, Macintosh 68k/PPC Version 4.0 and later; read/write; full alpha support; partial gamma and chromaticity support (gamma-writing appears to be broken, at least when the ambient-light setting is not at "medium"); so-so compression. (Photoshop 3.0 is also supported with the PNGForm.8BI plug-in for Windows or Infinop's plug-in for Macintosh. See also Macromedia's xRes below.)
PhotoStyler Windows Version 2.0 and later with Ulead UF2PNG.FIO plug-in; read/write. This was an Aldus product that was eliminated by Adobe. It was formerly bundled with some scanners (including HP).
VideoStudio Windows Version 2.0 and later; read/write.
Visio Windows, Windows 95, NT Version 4.1 and later; read/write (a patch [1.1M] with the new PNG and JPEG filters is available for users of version 4.0).
Visio Technical Windows, Windows 95, NT Version 4.1 and later; read/write (a patch [1.1M] with the new PNG and JPEG filters is available for users of version 4.0).

WebSuite Windows, Windows 95, NT All versions; read/write.
Xara Webster Windows 95, NT All versions; read/write.
XPaint Unix/X, Open VMS/X Version 2.3.1-png and later (PNG support fully integrated as of version 2.4.2); read/write; uses libpng and zlib; alpha-channel images not supported yet for writing. (The OpenVMS port [3.3M] for DECWindows contains both VAX and Alpha objects, but the VAX version doesn't work yet [crashes]. Full sources are also included.)
xRes Windows 95, NT, Macintosh Version 2.0 and later; read/write; full alpha support; no gamma support. Version 2.0 is being bundled with Kai's Power Tools 3.0 Special Edition, and version 3.0 is part of FreeHand Graphics Studio above.
