The Incubator project was created in October of 2002 to provide an
entry path to the Apache Software Foundation for projects and codebases
wishing to become part of the Foundation's efforts. Code donations from
external organisations and existing external projects wishing to move to
Apache will enter through the Incubator.
A large part of the Incubator's effort will be devoted to providing
documentation on how the Foundation works, and how to get things done
within its framework. As a consequence, it is expected that the Incubator
will also become a reference for new contributors to any of the Apache projects.
Since the Incubator project is one of the primary gateways into Apache
involvement, a lot of the documentation about the structural and
philosophical details of the Foundation will probably be prototyped
and developed right here. When they seem to accurately reflect reality
and cover the information they should, they'll probably be moved up to
the Foundation's main Web site.
