About Me

Enis Photo

In case that you want to know something about me, this web[1.0] page would be the answer among other things like my linked-in profile.

Professional Life

I have studied at Middle East Technical University(METU) between 2001 and 2006, and got a computer science degree. I am a M.Sc. candidate at the same university, with an expected graduation date of September 08. As part of my thesis work, I have been working on integrating semantics to web usage mining algorithms, and extracting a web site ontology to be used for semantic mapping of user actions.

I am a committer and a PMC member at the Apache Hadoop project, and a developer at the Apache Nutch project. I have been using and developing hadoop and nutch since 2006.

Personal Life

I was born in 1982 in Eskişehir, which is a sweet little city in Turkey. I stayed there until 2001, when I moved to Ankara, the capital city of Turkey to study at METU.

I have been very enthisuastic about computers and computer games since my childhood. I started my career in computer science to "develop games". But that dream never got realized, and now I have other interests like distributed computing, data mining, etc.

Other than the geeky stuff, I have other interest areas excluding computers, one of which is photography. I own an old-school Canon A1 camera and a brand new Canon D40. Some of my photos can be found at my flickr page.

Some thoughts about Hadoop

I was a happy user of hadoop, until I kept hitting on a very little bug. I kept asking myself "why they don't fix this?": And then I realized the very spirit of open source: If you want something do it yourself (just kidding). Later, my patch was accepted only to be found that it does the exact opposite thing :)

For now, I develop Hadoop for my personal interest in the project. Being a part of the ever-growing community and working on such a great project have been extremely fun.
As a side note, I may be available for hiring on consulting for hadoop and nutch.
